Have you ever started something and...

Have you ever been all excited about a project? Have you envisioned it in your mind? Do you know exactly what you are going to do? Have you ever gone through that?

Have you ever actually started on the project and hate it midway? Maybe "hate" is too strong a word. Maybe it just didn't speak to you or it did not turn out anything like you thought and you did not like where it was going.

Yeah, that just happened with me.

Oh sure, happens to me too! But, I usually don't hate what comes out. If I do, thats what gesso is for!!LOL! I do hear you Belinda. I believe we need to go with the flow and realize that the result is what you had in your subconscious. It's what your mind wanted you to create all along. No, I'm not nuts! Just trying to be open to new things. AFter all, they say that everything happens for a reason. And I find it hard to believe that Anything you do comes out bad. It's all so yummy looking!

The interesting thing about this phenomenon is that as far as I can tell, our opinions are never shared by anyone else.

This happens to Shoshanah and I from time to time; one of us will have a piece that we just hate, and the other will be mystified. I really liked the beginnings of this collage Shoshanah was working on that had Einstein in it, and she made me accept that she just didn't like it and was never going to finish it. At the same time, I made a collage that had a lot of promise but just nothing was working for me and I got disgusted; she bugs me about finishing that one from time to time.

I've decided that I want to figure out what it is about it that I hate; it might be useful to develop a skill for such "deconstructive criticism".

(At this point I suspect that it was probably some element that I worked really hard on and I can't imagine giving up that just doesn't work and I'll have to let go of it.)

I can't tell you how many times that has happened to me, Belinda! It drives me crazy! I've tried to figure out where I go wrong...but that's what art is all about...fail, fail, fail - but you keep going for that one sweet success that makes it worth it.

Yes, definitely! So, at that point either I decide to be completely adventurous and try anything that comes to mind - as I think I can't make it worse - or leave it and go back to it in a few months. By that point, I won't remember what it was supposed to look like; I only think of what I can make of it. It is very disappointing at first but I know now that eventually I'll do something with it.
