Blog Tour Q&A with Kathy Cano-Murillo

MY Question: how do you transitionfrom being an artist to a writer and how one affects the other. What pearls of wisdom you could provide inspiring writers (especially young Latinas)?

Kathy's Answer: It’s always an easy transition for me because I love both. But I often have art and book projects happening at the same time, so I only write at night. That way I know I always have that time set, and it gives me something to look forward to every day.

My advice for aspiring writers is to write! Start by jotting down ideas and then just go for it. It’s so hard to get going on that first paragraph. What I suggest is setting a timer for 15 minutes and then just write without stopping for that time until the alarm goes off. That’s a great way to get warmed up. Usually the first 15 minutes is stuff you will end up deleting, but at least it gets you rolling! Also, you have to tell yourself that no one is judging you, just let it out and follow through. Don’t think about agents or contracts or advances. If you are truly a real writer at heart, you will just WRITE!

Hope you enjoyed my end of the Blog Tour! If you didn't already see it, I just picked the two winners to receive the copies of her new book, Miss Scarlet's School of Patternless Sewing.

Also, I just recently posted a short review on this very fun, rich book. Hope all of you enjoy the book as much as I did. Later days all.

Thanks for the writing advice. I just started a new job this year and part of my job is to blog once a month. I enjoy writing, but often find myself intimidated by it. It's mostly just my own thoughts about my writing that slows me down. I like what you said about it often taking 15 minutes to warm up and get in the mind set of writing, and that most of the time that first paragraph or so is deleted, or at least rewritten a good bit. Thanks for sharing, I'll keep that in mind as I sit down to blog.
